How do you teach Social Studies in Preschool? I love mixing subjects. I like using reading to teach social studies or science. I love books to do both.
How do you teach social studies in preschool? I like to use pictures to help a child understand what words mean while they learn to read. I use books that teach social studies skills like seasons of the year, what clothes to wear for the weather and ways to travel. I think it is fun to have the child tell me what clothes they have to wear when it is snowing, then read the book together and see if they have any of those clothes. I also like to have the child tell me how they use different transportation. Does the child have a bike? Does the child ride in a car or a bus? Has the child ever been in an airplane? This helps the child to make the book real, and the social studies lesson remembered for a long time.
These books are also good because they build on sight words. They use the most common words in the English language to help build the child’s reading vocabulary. The pictures help the child to read the larger words, and learn phonics.
The most important thing to remember when you teach anything is to make it fun because when they’re laughing, they’re learning, so always Teach With Giggles. Written by Raeann Hansen 2019
